Gen Ogimi

1963年神奈川県中郡二宮町生まれ。隣家に暮らす祖母（アイルランド系イギリス人）の影響で英語と日本語に囲まれて育つ。米国籍のいとこ達との交流の中で The Beatlesに心酔、暇さえあればレコードプレイヤーの前で踊り狂う幼少期を過ごす。1970年代半ばに訪れたフォークギターブームに乗ってはじめたビートルズの弾き語り、時を同じくして母から誕生日に贈られた小さなボンゴが、その後の音楽人生の導火線となった。
1984年オルケスタ・デ・ラ・ルス結成、89年NY進出（後にグラミー賞カリビアン音楽新人賞ノミネート）、90年脱退。91年には、ティト・ニエベス・オーケストラにコンガ奏者として参加、95年帰国。97年結成のSALSA SWINGOZA、2019年始動のswingoza+ という２つのリーダーバンドを通じて日本のサルサシーンを牽引しながら、Dreams Come True、角松敏生、矢沢永吉、菊地成孔、佐藤竹善（SING LIKE TALKING）、葉加瀬太郎、絢香、藤井フミヤ、大西順子、フラメンコ曽根崎心中（鍵田真由美・佐藤浩希フラメンコ舞踊団ARTE Y SORELA）、沖仁 等、ジャンルを超えて数多くのアーティストのコンサートツアーやレコーディングに参加。世界中で体得したリズムのエッセンスを消化アレンジして繰り出すグルーヴは、唯一無二である。
2023年12月、キャリア初のソロアルバム「VERY PRESENT」をリリース。大儀見の音楽人生の軸となった、英語や日本語のロック、バラードを収めた”shaft”と、その軸に取り付けた車輪として、サルサやアフリカのリズム、サンテリアの宗教音楽からアイディアを得た曲を収録した”ring”の２枚で構成されている。

Gen Ogimi (Percussion, Vocal)
Born in Kanagawa in 1963, Ogimi began his musical journey through an early fascination with The Beatles and a small bongo gifted by his mother. In 1984, he co-founded Orquesta de la Luz, moving to New York in 1989 where the band was nominated for a Grammy Award. After leaving the group in 1990, he joined the Tito Nieves Orchestra as a conga player, then returned to Japan in 1995. He went on to form SALSA SWINGOZA in 1997 and swingoza+ in 2019, continuing to lead and shape the Japanese salsa scene.
He has performed and recorded with a wide range of artists across genres, including Dreams Come True, Toshiki Kadomatsu, Eikichi Yazawa, Naruyoshi Kikuchi, Chikuzen Sato (SING LIKE TALKING), Taro Hakase, Ayaka, Fumiya Fujii, Junko Onishi, and Jin Oki. With rhythms cultivated from around the world and transformed into his own unique groove, Ogimi’s sound remains unmistakable.
In December 2023, he released his first solo album, “VERY PRESENT.” Structured as a two-disc set, it features “shaft,” containing English and Japanese rock and ballads—the core of his musical identity—and “ring,” inspired by salsa, African rhythms, and sacred music of Santería, offering a rich and diverse musical journey.
