Oki Kano
In his twenties, Oki came out about his Ainu heritage, only to face misunderstanding and isolation from those around him. In 1997, he moved to New York, working in special effects and model making. Six years later, he returned to Japan after receiving an offer to work as an art director for a film in Tokyo — but the project fell through.
What remained, however, was the life-changing encounter he had back in 1993 in Hokkaido with the traditional Sakhalin Ainu instrument, the tonkori. Teaching himself to both play and craft it, he went on to establish his own label, Chikar Studio, releasing works by Umeko Ando, Marewrew, and his own Oki Dub Ainu Band.
Performing at major festivals worldwide, including WOMAD, Oki has continued to share a sound that is truly one of a kind. In April 2025, his first documentary as a director, “Everyday Ainu”, began year-round screenings at the Ainu Museum Theater. His ancestral roots stretch to the Kamchatka Peninsula, while on his mother’s side they trace back to Ehime prefecture.
